The wait was long and Beliebers had to be lucky to get a glimpse of their favorite celeb because security was tight and the Biebster didn't appear to be in a social mood, preferring to focus on Selena as he pulls his cap down and avoids looking at the cameras.

Can't blame Justin though. He was recently in Singapore (where he gave a press conference) and is now in Indonesia after his stop in Malaysia, and he'll soon be heading to Australia when the Asian leg of his tour is complete. Justin Bieber Paid $1 Million for Israel Concert (Exclusive) - Hollywood Reporter

Jack Guez/AFP/Getty Images

Justin Bieber fever hit the Holy Land last week as the teen phenom performed in Tel Aviv for the first time.

According to sources, the 17-year-old was paid $1 million for his April 14 concert at Hayarkon Park, where Madonna had entertained some 56,000 back in 2009. (Says the show's local producer Gadi Oron: "It is our policy not to talk about financial arrangements we reach with talent we promote.") And while the frenzy was most certainly felt among Israeli tweens -- one girl even came to the concert with a chuppah (the traditional Jewish wedding canopy) in hand -- the show wasn't exactly a sellout.

Local police estimated that 17,000 showed up for the 90-minute performance while event producers had the number at 24,000, well below the 35,000 attendees they had hoped to attract.

"They overpaid and did not market it right," says Israeli promoter Shuki Weiss, who declined to bid on Bieber believing it would be a difficult sell. "I think it's important for every artist to come to Israel, but you need to know your crowd."

Indeed, posters advertising the show were scant in the city, with the exception of areas surrounding Bieber's hotel, and with ticket sales initially sluggish, a promotion offering free entry to parents was introduced, causing its share of headaches at the park's gates.

But Weiss, who has brought over acts such as Linkin Park, Ozzy Osbourne and Missy Elliott, adds that the high price tag is not unusual. Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, who performed in the Jewish-Arab cooperative village Neve Shalom ("Oasis of Peace") in 2006, pocketed almost $2.5 million from that gig. And there's the matter of the many cancellations Israelis have had to contend with in recent years. Elvis Costello and the Pixies are just two acts who have called off confirmed shows days before they were to take the stage, each citing political reasons. It's no surprise then that ticket buyers -- and, in turn, other artists -- might be skittish.

Still, promoter Oron is not complaining, telling THR, "[The sales] definitely met our expectations." And neither is Bieber, who tweeted after taking his final bow, "AMAZING NIGHT ... AMAZING PLACE ...AMAZING SHOW!! NEVER GOING TO FORGET THIS ONE. #BLESSED."

Email: Shirley.Halperin@thr.com

Twitter: @shirleyhalperin

STARK
Massapequa, New York

Good investment
Sir, – Regarding "UK student union elects radical Islamists" (April 14), I think the students who elected the radicals should be offered free trips for an extended stay in the Islamic country of their choice.

Would they then come home to the UK and vote the same way?

HILDA SCHMERLER
Petah Tikva

Resonant analogy

Sir, – Eliezer Whartman's letter "Vocabulary lesson" (April 14) reminded me of an analogy that still resonates in my brain.

Comparing the size of Israel with that of the Arab or Muslim domains, if we envisage them as a football field, Israel could be a matchbox that lies in the middle.

Do we really believe that if we accede to the Arabs' demand for half the matchbox they will let us live in peace? Or will they be emboldened to take the other half as well? The persecution of Baha'is, Kurds and, of course, Christians in these same lands passes over the heads of this "assembly of the bizarre."

Only one nation is carefully examined, dissected, condemned and lied about by the "Oom- Shmoom," as our first prime minister prophetically called the world body.

But what is even more outlandish is that we celebrate our independence on a day connected to a resolution by this council of hypocrites. The resolution they endorsed that led to the Jewish nation of Israel was in fact meant as a death sentence, given the borders we were granted – borders that in no way were for a nation being restored to its homeland.

This year, more than ever, we must celebrate the true date of independence for the Jewish people.

That day is when our eternal Father took us out of slavery in Egypt and led us home to the land He promised our patriarchs.

Therefore, I urge every Jew to display our flag on the 14th day of Nisan, the real day we were granted independence as the true sons of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

DAVID STAR
Ma'aleh Adumim

Better use for rails
Sir, – Once again there is a delay in the operation of the the capital's light rail system ("J'lem light rail passenger trials delayed," News in Brief, April 13). Eventually, it might be dubbed "Jerusalem's Folly."

Considering the increasing number of cyclists in the city and the lack of proper bike lanes, perhaps the railway lanes should be turned over to the bikers. There are even benches on which to rest along the way!

DIANA SCHIOWITZ
Jerusalem

Desperate leaders
Sir, – Despite the recent escalation in violence, Israel allowed the transfer of 3,656 trucks to the Gaza Strip with food and medical supplies, and the transfer of an additional 2,100 truckloads of other goods, including gravel for construction ("Defense officials predict conflict with Hamas is likely to escalate," April 12).

How desperate our "leaders" are for world approval that we even continue to feed and supply our enemies. (And don't tell me they are innocent civilians: Those "innocent civilians" celebrated the slaughter of the Fogel family, the youngest being only three months old. Those "innocents" voted for Hamas.) The sickness of it all is that the more concessions we make, the more we are castigated, ridiculed and become – if we're not already – completely delegitimized.

And now we have Jewish first grade teacher Ma'ayan Elimelech of the Arabic-Hebrew bilingual school in Beersheba telling her Jewish and Arab pupils, who have spent the night in a bomb shelter or sealed room, that "there are always bad people on both sides and that bad people are bad people" ("School of hard knocks," Comment & Features, April 12).

The insinuation, of course, is that Israelis are also bad, even though we know our attacks come only in response to attacks by terrorists. This hardly sounds like a friend of Israel.

The fact that Power was personable and accessible to Boteach does not detract from the fact that she is a danger to Israel.

SHELLY WEINREB
Ra'anana

Fusion is the way
Sir, – The disasters in Japanese nuclear reactors have, rightly so, given this form of energy production a bad name. But controlled nuclear energy comes in two forms: nuclear fission, as with the present reactors, and nuclear fusion, the very process that formed all 92 elements from which our world is composed.

Fission inherently holds a potential danger due to the vast hordes of radioactive atoms produced as by-products. But the fusion of hydrogen nuclei to form helium entails no such danger. The byproduct is helium, inert and stable.

The science of the fusion process is totally known. It powers our sun.

The technology to attain the necessary high pressures and temperatures has yet to be acquired and so requires further research and development, but this is no more daunting than what was faced when controlled nuclear energy was first attained.

Nuclear fusion is literally nature's choice for long-term energy production.

Humankind would do well to take this lesson from nature and learn to apply it.

GERALD SCHROEDER
Jerusalem
The writer is a physicist and has witnessed nuclear detonations. I changed my mind about Justin Bieber - Inquirer.net

How I turned from skeptic to fan in 20 steps
I TURNED from skeptic to fan in 20 steps. When Justin Bieber says "Never say never," you better believe him. Because this could happen to you, too.

STEP 1:

Let the realization hit you after an evening spent watching YouTube videos of Maria Aragon and Heather Russell:

You never gave Justin Bieber a chance.

Maria and Heather both got your attention on YouTube, the same platform that launched Justin's career. But you've never seen the amateur videos of Justin. You've only seen him post-discovery, post-Scooter Braun, post-record deal, post-Usher—shiny hair, big smile and crazy confidence—and you dismissed him as the product of marketing geniuses, as a kid posing as a pop star, all spin and no substance.

And now you realize you might be wrong.

STEP 2:

Log on to YouTube, search for "Justin Bieber old video" and start clicking.

Watch a younger Justin sitting outside, playing the guitar, singing a gospel song. Watch 12-year-old Justin playing the guitar and singing Edwin McCain's "I'll Be." Watch Justin with a black cap on his head, playing the guitar and singing Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River." Watch tiny Bieber playing the drums. Watch Justin playing the keyboards. See Justin's silhouette singing "So Sick" by Ne-Yo. See clearer videos of Justin singing "Fallin'" by Alicia Keys and "Respect" by Aretha Franklin. Watch Justin sitting on a couch singing Chris Brown's "With You." Check out Bart Simpson on the poster on the wall behind Justin and realize that even Bart can't distract you from the truth—Justin Bieber can sing.

The kid is talented—just a handful grainy videos were enough to tell you that. But why didn't you see it before?

STEP 3:

Read this comment on one of Justin's videos:

Guests123: "It's funny because I bet if he wasn't famous and all he did was make vids on YouTube no one would be saying, 'He is a no talent hack' or 'He is a girl who needs to die' or even 'He can't sing.' If Justin Bieber didn't become famous, everyone would be saying, 'WOW WHAT AN AMAZING VOICE WHY HAS NO ONE DISCOVERED YOU YET?!?!?!' It's funny isn't it? It also makes me sick that this is how people think."

Find yourself nodding along so enthusiastically that you can pass for a bobblehead.

STEP 4:

Feel ashamed for the time wasted picking on Justin, making him the punch line, and waving him off as something only pre-pubescent girls can understand. You're not a pre-pubescent girl but you kind of understand now.

STEP 5:

When word leaks about the evening you spent doing nothing but watching one Justin Bieber video after another, defend yourself. "No, I'm not turning into a fan!"

STEP 6:

Accept that you're an adult and that you need to make informed choices. How did you realize you hated pickles? Because you put one of those nasty things in your mouth. How did you realize you love century eggs? Because you put one of those nasty things in your mouth. How can you be sure you hate Justin Bieber's music if you haven't actually listened to it? Being forced by little kids to dance to "Baby" at a 60-year-old's birthday does not count as listening. And hating for the sake of hating is not cute, it's stupid.

STEP 7:

Listen to Justin's first album "My World" and realize with a mixture of horror and relief that he sounds younger than your youngest cousin. Okay, tell yourself, I'm really not his target audience. Okay, I'm off the hook. Breathe a huge sigh of relief.

STEP 8:

Listen to Justin's second album "My World 2.0." Find your feet involuntarily moving to Somebody To Love. Find your head moving in time with U Smile. Shout out excitedly, "Oh my god, Eenie Meenie is Justin's?! I like this song!" Realize that you now sound like a pre-pubescent girl. So much for not being Justin's target audience.

STEP 9:

Ignore friends who make fun of you for having Justin's songs in your iPod. Thirty is not too old to be listening to his songs.

STEP 10:

Ignore friends who speculate about you watching "Never Say Never." Duh. Of course you're watching.

STEP 11:

Sit in the dark theater with your big bucket of popcorn and watch "Never Say Never." A few minutes into the film, tell the person beside you, "I'm getting goosebumps." Ignore her when she says, "Malamig lang."

STEP 12:

Watch "Never Say Never" in its entirety and feel blown away by Justin's incredible story. Find yourself moved to tears. Find yourself wanting to give Justin's grandpa a hug. Find yourself loving "Never Say Never" so much that you tell everyone on Facebook how much you loved it. Realize with glee that there are Bieber fans on your feed and—here's the best part—they're your age.

STEP 13:

Read Marc Shapiro's "Justin Bieber: The Fever!" Read "Superstars! Justin Bieber." Let the experience remind you of those days many years ago when you considered BOP and Teen Beat pinups gold.

STEP 14:

Go back to the cinemas to watch "Never Say Never" again. Bring friends who swore they'd never become fans. Resist the urge to cackle when they walk out of the theater a little dazed and hit with Bieber Fever.

STEP 15:

Spew Justin Bieber trivia and tell everyone you know to watch "Never Say Never." Ignore the strange looks and expressions of disbelief you get. Make arguments so convincing any lawyer would be proud. Leave people with no choice but to promise you they'd watch the movie.

STEP 16:

Notice that you automatically start with "Down To Earth" when listening to Justin's songs. You actually have a favorite Bieber song and you're not ashamed to admit it.

STEP 17:

Read "First Step 2 Forever," enjoy it immensely and finally let it sink that the impossible had happened. You, who worshipped Alanis and flew for Rachael Yamagata, who abandoned boy bands after New Kids On The Block, who've managed to resist the charms of Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift and just about any other teenybopper sensation the world has managed to produce, have really and truly become a Justin Bieber fan.

STEP 18:

Accept that there is nothing wrong with being a Justin Bieber fan. That there is nothing to be ashamed of. What is wrong with liking a talented kid who works hard, loves his fans and his family, gives back to the world and stays grounded? What is there to hate about someone who inspires people to pursue their passions and fight for their dreams?

STEP 19:

Resist the urge to argue with Bieber haters. It's futile and it's their loss. Laugh when a 14-year-old girl tells you, "You're scaring me!" when you start singing along to Justin's songs.

STEP 20:

Count the days until Justin's Manila concert and pray that you will get to meet him.

Justin Bieber to be on 'Dancing With The Stars'? - Gather Celebs News Channel

He recently posted a Twitter video called, "Career Change!", which features his skills in soccer. Through the video, he probably would like to show people how he was a pretty good soccer player, thus he might want to play soccer for life.
Last week, the Canadian pop idol was snapped as he was holding a during his stop in Spain for the European leg of his "My World" tour. Review: Justin Bieber: Never Say Never - Herald Sun

Justin Bieber: Never Say Never gives fans around the world an exclusive VIP backstage pass into the life of the teen sensation. Source: Supplied

Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (G) Director: John Chu (Step Up 2: The Streets)Starring: Justin Bieber, Jaden Smith, Miley Cyrus, Usher, Pattie Mallette, L.A. Stars: ***

NOT surprisingly, it is hard work being Justin Bieber, pan-global tween-age sensation.

Absolutely surprisingly, it is not hard work watching Never Say Never.

In spite of its airy brief as a panting PR puff piece, this engaging concert-doco takes a semi-revealing splash inside the fishbowl through which its subject sees the world.

The opening half-hour of Never Say Never is particularly strong, charting Bieber's trailblazing odyssey from the outskirts of Nowheresville to the best address in Everywhere City with refreshing honesty and feeling.

Born to a teenage single mother in Canada and broke as broke can be for his entire childhood, the kid really did beat some billion-to-one odds to make it to the top. Only a total churl would not draw some inspiration from the viral marketing miracle that landed the lad's way.

Some choice video footage shows a little boy all of five years old playing drums like a pro. By age eight he had the guitar and piano well under control. At 10, Bieber could play the trumpet, sing with note-perfect gusto and rap in a respectable enough fashion.
Nevertheless, he had to wait four long years before some grainy clips uploaded to YouTube - sourced from performances that only won him second place in a hometown talent quest - began to warp the world of popular culture as we know it.

The second act of Never Say Never sees proceedings become somewhat fluffier and stuffier, as it prods those in the know for information about what it's like to be Justin Bieber right now. We hear at length from his mum Pattie (a nice lady), his grandparents (solid citizens), his childhood buddies (well-adjusted youths) and his management team (who can't quite hide that ch-ching glint in their eyes).

But strangely, we don't hear anything from Bieber at all. Though he can be witnessed joshing with his entourage from time to time, Bieber is the only participant in Never Say Never who does not directly address the filmmakers.

From this we come to learn that while much happens around Justin Bieber on a daily basis, not much happens to him. That's part of the package when you're a commodity. And it's partly sad when you recall that chirpy proto-prodigy from early in the film.

The rest of Never Say Never is pretty much what you feared it was going to be all along. During the Bieb's sell-out run at Madison Square Garden some special guest stars drop by to pay homage, push product, or both. Miley Cyrus clomps on stage throwing some very tired shapes, like the moody older sister Justin never had.

Jaden Smith might have starred in The Karate Kid, but he should be known as The Can't-Hold-A-Note Kid. At this sorry point in their career, Boyz II Men will Sing IV Food.

And there's Usher, gleefully bouncing about like anyone getting five per cent off the top of this phenomenon (for having handballed Bieber to his grateful record label) surely would.

VISIT justinbieberneversay never.com

Bieber fever burns in 3D - Inquirer.net

'Never Say Never' is more than just about the swishing hair--it's about believing in your dream and pursuing it
JUSTIN BIEBER is the epitome of dreams made manifest through sheer perseverance and faith. This is the take-away from Bieber's inspiring story in his movie, "Never Say Never," the premiere of which I watched in the company of fiercely loyal Bieber fans last March 22 at SM Megamall.

Who would have known that the singing acts he had uploaded on YouTube would vault him to pop stardom? "This shows that social networking is really powerful," says one of his concert crew members. Bieber always goes on Twitter or online to promote himself for radio guestings or mini-concerts.

In spite all his achievements, however, Bieber has held on to his values. As 15-year-old Bieber fan Michelle Abigan told me, "He doesn't sing about money, fame, or sex just to sell, and he remains down-to-earth. He's one of the few remaining singers with true talent and firm beliefs."

"Justin Bieber's music is sexy," said another Bieber fan at the premiere. "He is very talented and gives us motivation," gushed another. And he's so much cuter, too, on the 3D screen. When he swished his hair (in slow-mo), everyone in the movie house screamed—because he looked so cute!

Regular boy

Justin Bieber was a regular boy who had friends, played basketball and soccer, and went to school in his hometown in Ontario, Canada.

At the start of the film, he sings "With You" with Chris Brown in a YouTube videoclip. Soon enough, the video clip got lots of hits—and Bieber became a worldwide phenomenon.

Many girls who were interviewed in the movie have become such die-hard Bieber fans that they know not only the day he was born, but the time, as well. That would be March 1, 1994 at 12:56 a.m., in case you didn't know yet!

His baby pictures come flashing next, and they are so adorable! He plays with a small bongo drum in one of his birthdays. Did you know that he also loves playing the trumpet, keyboards, guitar and violin?

Many may not know also that he played jazz, and he wanted to become a drummer. He once put up a benefit concert to get himself a set of drums. And just as added trivia, Bieber could actually solve a Rubik's Cube in one and a half minutes, to be exact.

While in Toronto, Canada, he joined the "Stratford Idol" singing contest. His mother Pattie Mallette said that even if he didn't win, it would have been okay since he had no training anyway. Bieber won second place; he was just 12 then.

That was when he gave up his normal life. He performed in various schools across America. He'd get on the tour bus with his biology books and read through them while in transit from one city to the next. He still valued his studies, even as he was busy nurturing his fledgling career.

By then, he already had a musical coach, whom he fondly referred to as "Mama Jan." During one vocal training session, he is seen in the movie singing with his microphone in the bathroom, practicing for his upcoming concert.

There's a really touching scene in the movie where a girl plays the violin in front of Avon Theater, and Bieber goes up to her and praises her. When she asks if he is really Justin Bieber, and he says yes, the girl is flabbergasted. "Just follow your dreams, okay?" Bieber tells her.

It turns out that Avon Theater was the very same place where Bieber played the guitar when he was just 12.

Floored

His manager Scooter Braun, who discovered him on YouTube, asks him and his family to go to Atlanta. When Bieber arrives, he is totally floored to see his idol Usher at the door! Usher, at first, thinks he is Braun's little cousin. Bieber asks if he can sing one of Usher's songs, after which it is Usher's turn to be floored. "Who is this kid?!" he exclaims.

His concert at Madison Square Garden was sold out. Bieber's performance there confirmed that he had finally arrived. Still, he kept his feet on the ground. He made people happy in his hometown Ottawa by giving free tickets to those who couldn't afford to go to his concerts.

And he continued with the "tradition" of picking out a random girl in his concert performances, and making that girl the "One Less Lonely Girl" he describes in one of his hit songs in his "My World" album. He sings her a song and gives her a bouquet of flowers.

Bieber has had his share of challenges on the way to the top. Just before his performance at Madison Square Garden, he developed not only a sore throat, but lumps in his vocal chords, and couldn't sing.

Mama Jan advised him to postpone the show. "But I don't want to let all the kids down," reasons Bieber, determined to make his fans happy and give his best. He wouldn't give up. And he pulled through just fine.

"I was just watching TV in my room, and now here I am living my dream and doing what I love," says Bieber as scenes of his concert at Madison Square Garden flicker on the television screen.

"There's gonna be a time in your life when people say you can't live your dreams. Just never say never!" Beiber exclaims to his fans as he sings with all his heart and soul to them.

Bieber's movie is all about believing in your dreams and going for them. He's not just a singing phenomenon; he's an enduring role model for teenagers looking for their own little place in the sun.
