Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez step out as a couple - Mirror.co.uk

HEAR that loud clang? It's the sound of teenage hearts breaking all over the world – Justin Bieber is officially OFF the market.

The Baby singer has finally admitted that he and Disney starlet Selena Gomez, 18, are indeed an item.

After months of secret dates, during which they have denied any romance, the Canadian foetus stepped out with Selena at the Vanity Fair party following Sunday's Oscars.

And just in case we hadn't got the message, it was giggles, love notes and knee squeezes all round for the teenage sweethearts at the glitzy bash at LA's Sunset Tower. Diddums.

A source tells me: "Justin has been wanting to go public with Selena for months, but it wasn't until now that they finally felt the time was right.

"Selena was delighted when Justin asked her to go as his date a few weeks ago. They spent the whole night wrapped up in each other, with Bieber introducing her to his famous pals as his 'hot girlfriend'. They giggled in the corner, writing secret messages to each other on their mobiles.

"Selena didn't let go of his hand all night. Then Justin pulled her into a photobooth where they took some snaps.

Advertisement - article continues below »

"They're clearly smitten." Aah!

The pair even wore his 'n' hers Dolce & Gabbana outfits.

Justin, who turns 17 today, wore a shiny black suit with a red handkerchief sticking out his pocket that matched Selena's prom-style dress.

Bizarrely, Mick Jagger took young Justin under his wrinkly wing and chaperoned him around the bash – when he could surgically remove the lad from Selena's face, that is.

An onlooker says: "He wanted to show Justin how to make the best of a showbiz bash. But Justin only had eyes for his missus." Jagger ain't the only geriatric on hand to help out Justin. His nan has promised to bake him his favourite cherry cheesecake for his birthday – when Justin is introducing Selena to his family.

Sadly the pair are about to be parted. Justin starts his tour this week, kicking off in Birmingham on Friday.

How will they cope? Life's so unfair!

Justin Bieber Reveals Birthday Plans, Talks Haircut - MTV.com

Justin Bieber turns 17 on March 1, and he's revealing what his plans are for the big day.

"I only have, like, four days, so I'm just going to relax, because I start my world tour starting on [March 4] -- so just going to mentally prepare and just relax," Justin told "Entertainment Tonight." "No birthday bash. ... Hopefully my grandparents will be out here and I'll be able to spend time, a little bit, with them. My grandma makes the best cheesecake -- cherry cheesecake. She made that for my 13th birthday."

Of course, Bieber's birthday isn't the only thing making headlines these days. His new haircut has also been causing quite the hoopla, but Bieber seems to be brushing it off. "I just wanted to [cut my hair], that's all. Not really a big reason; I just woke up and said, 'I don't want this anymore,' so I just cut it," he said. "It's not really about that. You know, the fans really liked it, but they'll like me no matter what, because I think it's about the music. I'm really excited to see what the fans overseas think and take it day by day."

Bieber will re-release his 3-D flick "Never Say Never" this weekend. "It's 40 minutes of extra footage, so it's basically like a new movie," he says. "It's real exciting, because it shows me and my friends more and it shows a different part of the concert, so it's going to be great. Hopefully all the fans will go back and watch it."

Next week, in addition to his birthday, Bieber will also kick off his European tour. "I'm excited to see what [Willow Smith] brings to the table," he said. "We start on March 4, so she's really excited, and she told me that she can't wait -- and she's adorable -- so I can't wait.

"I have such great people around me and such good family," he added. "I just want to be a good role model to people, and to be able to just make good music. ... I'm going to make mistakes, but it's about learning from them and becoming better. ... My movie shows that anything is possible and dreams do come true. ... Remember to always stay humble and always be gracious and anything can happen."

What do you think about Bieber's new 'do? Let us know in the comments!

Music exec slams Grammys for snubbing Justin Bieber, Eminem - Entertainment Weekly

An Open Letter to Neil Portnow, NARAS and the Grammy Awards

Over the course of my 20-year history as an executive in the music business and as the owner of a firm that specializes in in-culture advertising, I have come to the conclusion that the Grammy Awards have clearly lost touch with contemporary popular culture. My being a music fan has left me with an even greater and deeper sense of dismay — so much so that I feel compelled to write this letter. Where I think that the Grammys fail stems from two key sources: (1) over-zealousness to produce a popular show that is at odds with its own system of voting and (2) fundamental disrespect of cultural shifts as being viable and artistic.

As an institution that celebrates artistic works of musicians, singers, songwriters, producers and technical specialists, we have come to expect that the Grammys upholds all of the values that reflect the very best in music that is born from our culture. Unfortunately, the awards show has become a series of hypocrisies and contradictions, leaving me to question why any contemporary popular artist would even participate. How is it possible that in 2001 The Marshall Mathers LP — an album by Eminem that ushered in the Bob Dylan of our time — was beaten out by Steely Dan (no disrespect) for Album Of The Year? While we cannot solely utilize album sales as the barometer, this was certainly not the case. Not only is Eminem the best-selling artist of the last decade, but The Marshall Mathers LP was a critical and commercial success that sold over 10 million albums in the United States (19 million worldwide), while Steely Dan sold less than 10% of that amount and came and went as quietly as a church mouse. Or consider even that in 2008 at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, after going into the night as the most-nominated artist, Kanye West's Graduation was beaten out for Album Of The Year by Herbie Hancock's River: The Joni Letters. (This was the first time in 43 years that a jazz album won this category.) While there is no doubt in my mind of the artistic talents of Steely Dan or Herbie Hancock, we must acknowledge the massive cultural impact of Eminem and Kanye West and how their music is shaping, influencing and defining the voice of a generation. It is this same cultural impact that acknowledged the commercial and critical success of Michael Jackson's Thriller in 1984.

Just so that I'm not showing partiality to hip-hop artists (although it would be an entirely different letter as to how hip-hop music has been totally diminished as an art form by this organization), how is it that Justin Bieber, an artist that defines what it means to be a modern artist, did not win Best New Artist? Again, his cultural impact and success are even more quantifiable if you factor in his YouTube and Vevo viewership — the fact that he was a talent born entirely of the digital age whose story was crafted in the most humble method of being "discovered" purely for his singing ability (and it should be noted that Justin Bieber plays piano and guitar, as evidenced on his early viral videos).

So while these very artists that the public acknowledges as being worthy of their money and fandom are snubbed year after year at the Grammys, the awards show has absolutely no qualms in inviting these same artists to perform. At first I thought that you were not paying attention to the fact that the mental complexion of the world is becoming tanned, that multiculturalism and poly-ethnicity are driving new meaning as to what is culturally relevant. Interesting that the Grammys understands cultural relevance when it comes to using Eminem's, Kanye West's or Justin Bieber's name in the billing to ensure viewership and to deliver the all-too-important ratings for its advertisers.

What truly inspired the writing of this letter was that this most recent show fed my suspicions. As the show was coming to a close and just prior to presenting the award for Album Of The Year, the band Arcade Fire performed "Month of May" — only to… surprise… win the category and, in a moment of sheer coincidence, happened to be prepared to perform "Ready to Start."

Does the Grammys intentionally use artists for their celebrity, popularity and cultural appeal when they already know the winners and then program a show against this expectation? Meanwhile the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences hides behind the "peer" voting system to escape culpability for not even rethinking its approach.

And I imagine that next year there will be another televised super-close-up of an astonished front-runner as they come to the realization before a national audience… that he or she was used.

You are being called to task at this very moment, NARAS.

And to all of the artists that attend the Grammys: Stop accepting the invitation to be the upset of the year and demand that this body upholds its mission for advocacy and support of artistry as culture evolves.

Demand that they change this system and truly reflect and truly acknowledge your art.

Steve Stoute

Justin Bieber â the girls, the Google hits... and THAT hairstyle - Mirror.co.uk

Linked to a string of beauties and with the film of his life so far breaking box office records, Justin Bieber is the most Googled name on the planet.

Not bad for a boy whose voice hasn't fully broken. But the real secret of his success is his appeal to the opposite sex. Thousands of hysterical girls camped outside the O2 last week as he arrived at the Brits to pick up his award for International Breakthrough Artist.

Inside, glamorous older stars such as Cheryl Cole, Jessie J and Rihanna queued up to steal a kiss from the teen sensation.

But while millions around the globe adore him, one woman has captured his heart – Disney star Selena Gomez, who at 18 is two years his senior.

And although things are serious between them, she should not take anything for granted – Justin may be only 16 but he already has a roving eye.

Friends have warned: "Justin's cute and he knows it. He could have any woman he chooses and is lapping up the attention. Selena better watch out."

Even the man himself admits: "I'm here just having fun and not taking myself too seriously. I like all girls. I like a girl with a nice smile and who's funny.

"As far as looks, my taste is dark hair. But I don't limit myself. I like girls with blonde hair too. I like everything."

As Justin goes from one awards ceremony to another, pretty brunette Selena is no doubt watching with an anxious eye. Their romance – the worst-kept secret in showbiz – was established beyond doubt when they were spotted strolling hand in hand in Santa Monica then enjoying an intimate break in St Lucia last month.

Justin, wearing just a pair of shorts, was snapped tenderly kissing a bikini-clad Selena and patting her on the bottom.

During a recent interview, the singer opened his laptop to reveal his screensaver – a romantic sunset shot of them together. And last week for Valentine's he was spotted in lingerie store Victoria's Secret, where he spent thousands of pounds.Justin has been reluctant to confirm the romance, saying: "I don't think it's really anyone's business what my private life is. Some things you just have to keep to yourself." But he did reveal: "I don't think you should have sex with anyone unless you love them."

Selena also denied that they were dating.

Advertisement - article continues below »

"Oh my gosh. Justin is one of my best friends," she claimed. "That's all it is. All innocent."

Justin did, though, give away a few clues as to what is really going on: "There are so many girls who would just do anything for me because of my status. Someone told me it's great to be with somebody who has just as much to lose as you do. It's probably a good idea if I go out with someone famous."

It looks like Selena is that special person. A huge star in her own right, she also has the squeaky-clean Disney brand to support. But while she was a supporter of the True Love Waits chastity campaign, it's perhaps significant that she no longer wears her purity ring – a symbol of a no-sex-before-marriage pledge.

One reason to keep the relationship under wraps is the wrath of Justin's teenage fans – the Beliebers.

"I hate u, i want you to die," tweeted one young fan to Selena on finding out about the romance. Another added: "I'll kill you I swear on GOD!!!!", "If you are the Girlfriend of Justin I will Kill you I HATE YOU :@ !!!" and the vile slur: "Stay away from Justin, I'll kill you!"

Justin's manager Scooter Braun is also keen that his young star is seen as single, saying: "This kid travels a lot and I always told him, 'You shouldn't be in a relationship unless you can give someone everything'."

But while Justin is smitten with Selena and is said to be buying a multi-million-pound apartment in LA so he can be near her, for such a young man he already has quite a track record as a heart-breaker. The first girl linked to him was fellow singer Jacqueline Rae Pyles, who has since been dumped by his record label. Then there was first love Jasmine Villegas, also a singer, who was cast aside to make way for Gomez. He is also close to reality star Kim Kardashian, who at 30 is 14 years his senior. After one meeting, Justin posted a picture on Twitter and wrote: "Look it's my girlfriend Kim Kardashian."

During a magazine photo shoot on a Bahamas beach, Kim tweeted: "I messed up Justin Bieber's hair."

Ah, the hair... that tousled moptop is becoming almost as famous as the man himself. The style, known simply as The Bieber, is side-sweeping America, swiftly becoming the must-have style for teenage boys. Salons charge up to £80 for the helmet-like cut with long, side-brushed fringe. Some boys are too embarrassed to ask for it by name, so they describe the combed-over do with no mention of Justin.

No doubt boys copying the style are hoping it will give them some of the star's legendary appeal to girls – which is growing as quickly as his sales figures.

And as his film Never Say Never smashes all box office records and his fortune gets ever vaster, it seems unlikely Justin will be able to stay a one-woman boy for long.

scoops@sundaymirror.co.uk

Buy Cheap tickets for the upcoming X Factor Live 2011 Tour , prices start at £27 and are available now..

JUSTIN BIEBER: THE WORLD'S HARDEST WORKING HEART-THROB - Express.co.uk

After a near-riot at a New Zealand airport, an overwhelmed New York shopping mall and girls trampled before a concert in Sydney it should be no surprise that thousands of screaming fans camped out in London this week before the European premiere of Justin Bieber's 3-D movie Never Say Never.

He's only 16 but the small-town Canadian teenager, who is in this country to promote the film, has conquered pop culture, from the music charts to a bestselling book, TV and film, and is dominating the internet – which has dealt with more than one billion requests for information on him. True "Beliebers", as his fans have become known, swoon over his adorable fresh-faced innocence, honeyed voice and mop of chestnut hair.

Millions of parents, weary of buying their offspring a plethora of magazines, action figures, fragrances and anything else connected to the Bieber phenomenon, may roll their eyes in bewilderment at the schoolboy who seems to have struck it rich virtually overnight, as if by luck.

At first glance it appears that his success rested on a few home-made videos of him singing posted on the internet being spotted before he was taken on by pop icon Usher, who promoted and packaged him. A typical example of the triumph of marketing over musical talent, in other words. Only it's not true.

"Justin Bieber is one of the hardest working stars – of any age – in music today," says Los Angeles record producer John Harris. "His success is the result of years of dedication, unquestioned talent and plain old hard work. He's been lucky but he's earned his success."

Jon Chu, who directed Bieber's new movie which opens here this weekend, agrees: "His story is a fairytale but it didn't just happen overnight. He worked his butt off."

Bieber's manager Scooter Braun says: "He's gone from 12-year-old in a small town to world-class entertainer."

Rejected by most record companies four years ago Bieber approached pop icons for help. "He had the talent," says Usher. "I thought, 'Man, I'd love to be a part of shaping what he is to become.'"

And that's when the hard work began. Bieber played every small venue across America to build an audience: water parks, shopping malls, street fairs, theme parks. No venue was too humiliating.

"He must have visited every radio station in the country to play a set," says Braun. Bieber played to bored shoppers, passing tourists, anyone who would listen. And his fan base grew. When his debut CD emerged in November 2009 it was an instant hit spawning singles One Time, One Less Lonely Girl, Favourite Girl and Love Me.

Yet such success was alien to the boy from a broken home and impoverished childhood. His mother, petite blue-eyed brunette Pattie Mallette, who left home at 15, admits: "I was messed up on drugs and alcohol. At 17 I went to hospital for trying to commit suicide."

She turned her life around only to become pregnant at 19 with Justin out of wedlock by martial arts fighter Jeremy Bieber, then 20. "They split up when I was a baby," says Bieber, who remains close to his father.

Raised by his mum in council housing in Stratford, Ontario, he recalls: "That place was really dirty. There were mice in the house. I didn't have a real bed. I slept on a blue pullout couch in my room. We didn't have anything in the fridge, ever, except maybe lunch meat for school and macaroni and cheese."

Mallette worked numerous odd jobs to make ends meet but after work friends came round and played instruments, exposing Bieber to music. At four he demonstrated an impressive sense of rhythm, tapping out beats on a kitchen chair, soon graduating to a drum kit. By 10 he had also mastered the guitar, piano and trumpet.

At 12 he started busking on street corners and at 13 earned $3,000 performing outside a local theatre. That year his proud mum posted online videos of him singing for relatives to view, little expecting that they would spark a global phenomenon.

"It wasn't something that my mum forced, it just kind of happened organically,"

he says. "I was never that kid who wanted to be famous. I just sang for fun.

"To be honest I never really wanted to be a singer. It kind of just happened, basically by fluke. I put those videos on YouTube for friends and family and it got a lot of views. Because of that I got a lot of managers trying to contact me."

Among them was Scooter Braun, who invited Bieber to Atlanta in 2007 in the hope of securing a recording deal. They spent six months posting new videos and building an online fan base that became a tidal wave that is still growing. "I ended up meeting Usher and he helped me basically to get signed to a record label," Bieber explains.

LA Reid, head of Bieber's record label Island Def Jam, says of the fans: "Justin sold them a dream and they are buying it hook, line and sinker. The girls just love him. They think he's their boyfriend, that there's a shot for them."

Worth an estimated £60million already Bieber cannot touch his fortune until he turns 18, though a bank card allows him to survive day-to-day, buying meals, flights to Los Angeles or renting a Ferrari. "I don't love money," he says, "because once you start loving money you've got a big house and nice car and just an empty heart."

Such views are coloured by his religious beliefs, which have also caused waves. In a recent interview he made plain his opposition to abortion and sex before marriage. This has much to do with his mother's infl uence. She became an evangelical Christian after conquering her drug addiction. "I feel I've an obligation to plant little seeds with my fans. I'm not going to tell them 'you need Jesus' but I will say at the end of my show, 'God loves you'."

In some ways he is a typical teenager: he is a video-game addict, plays music at deafening volume and sports braces across his teeth. But unlike most teens he drives a Range Rover, has a tour bus with two flat-screen TVs and swings a £100,000 crucifix of black diamonds from his neck.

His girlfriend is teen Disney TV star Selena Gomez and when in Los Angeles he stays at movie star Will Smith's home.

He is also still developing physically.

Bieber's voice belatedly started changing during his US tour last year and he no longer hits the high notes fans expect.

"He's got a nice tone to his voice now, a good texture but it doesn't sound like what his fans think he sounds like," admits his vocal coach Jan Smith. Bieber, 17 next month, is also painfully aware that pop history is littered with forgotten teen idols and his movie even features a brief cameo by Miley Cyrus, now 18 and struggling to maintain her grasp on fame.

Miley presents a cautionary tale for Bieber: a Disney princess packaged and promoted with her hit TV series Hannah Montana. Only two years ago she was starring in her own blockbuster 3-D concert movie but for the past year Disney has been searching for replacements after Miley obliterated her squeaky-clean image with a move-in boyfriend, five tattoos and stories of drug-taking.

Bieber immerses himself in yet more hard work to avoid that fate. He wants to star in a remake of Oliver Twist, is working on fourth album Believe and has numerous TV acting roles lined up.

Yet he knows that his future rests not just in his talent but also in the fickle favour of his fans. "My fans are powerful," he says. "It's all in their hands. If they don't buy my albums I go away."

And after all his hard work and undoubted talent that would be a shame.

The Scary Implications of the Rapid Spread of Bieber Fever - The Emory Wheel

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Or Justin Bieber fans staying up past their bedtimes on a Sunday night.
Some were surprised when the Grammys awarded jazz artist Esperanza Spalding with their "Best New Artist" recognition. Bieber's creepers, however, just became enraged. Below are some of the tweets recorded by the entertainment blog "Pop2It" after Bieber was denied the award:

"you have a 3D movie? do 86 concerts? sell out MSG in 22 minutes? have 7mil followers? no? uh..why da f--k you win a grammy?"

"@ESPESPALDING @THEGRAMMYS Congrats u ppl! U just crushed a 16yr old boys dreams...hope ur proud of urselves! -_- #JustinDeservedIt"

"So, @EspeSpalding just won with less than 10,000 followers on twitter. LOL. Sorry, I must have accidently turned my t.v to Punk'd. #Grammys"

"@EspeSpalding hate u"

This isn't the first time Bieber's fans have thrown joint, public temper tantrums. When photos surfaced of Bieber and Disney star Selena Gomez sharing a kiss, the Internet-tubes were clogged with death threats from disillusioned uberfans. (One favorite: "whore cancer whore..like i'mm kill myself cuz i saw you and Justin kissing well thankyou Selena thankyou now i'm killing myself.") Kim Kardashian received the same treatment when she directed a platonic public gesture of affection Bieber's way.

So why is this considered acceptable, when any other public figure would be held to some degree of culpability for their fans' out-of-control and potentially violent shenanigans? Kardashian quickly laughed away the threats as benign, while gossip and entertainment blogs reported the anti-Esperanza Spalding tweets after the Grammys with barely an eyebrow raised in surprise.

It probably has a lot to do with the fact that it's widely appreciated that these raging Bieber fanatics are elementary and middle school aged children, with little recourse to act on their obsession outside the realm of social networking sites. But if the whims of children are to be ignored when evaluating the madness surrounding Bieber Fever, there still needs to be an adequate method of weeding out the effects of childhood ravings on the rest of the music world.

Look at any list of top-selling albums, and it's clear that the aggressively-young demographic is exerting a disproportionate impact on the music industry. With access to their parents' credit cards, an iTunes account or both, the youngest among us can exert an influence on online commerce in ways never before imaginable.

Stories such as the one detailed by a BusinessWeek article from last summer telling of a $375 iTunes "hack" by the author's stepdaughter, and the recent moves by Apple to reform its App stores to make "stealth" purchases less easy to execute are symptoms of this new reality. With song and album purchases just a click away — and more and more savvy potential customers downloading their music from other sources — the least informed can enjoy the most influence over sale figures.

The consequences of the new normal, however, are abundantly clear to anyone who has ever had the misfortune of listening to a contemporary rock station. Nickelback claimed the mantle of top-selling hard rock and metal album of 2010. Linkin Park was second.

A glance over at the "On Demand" section of the site of Atlanta's Project 96.1 contemporary rock station shows a variety of offerings from Papa Roach, Stone Sour, Buckcherry and Hinder in their top 20 list, bands more likely to appeal to listeners with undeveloped musical tastes. (It's also possible that Atlantans have generally poor taste in artists. But let's try to be charitable.)

As with many other parenting issues there does not seem to be an across-the-board answer to this scourge. Perhaps Bieber should publicly air what — one would hope — must be his displeasure with his fans' antics. It would be better, though, if parents of pre-teen and teenaged children to maintain vigilance regarding their children's Internet habits. Don't let junior onto Twitter if he (or she) uses it to direct death threats at pop stars. And for the love of all that is sacred, never, ever let them download anything by Chad Kroeger. A New Box Office Model - Paramount's 'Justin Bieber: Never Say Never' - TheWrap

By Daniel Frankel

He may not have won a Grammy, but Justin Bieber achieved something this weekend no one else has through the first six weeks of the year -- draw large numbers of kids to the box office, and do it without spending a lot of money.

With Bieber's "Never Say Never" grossing an impressive $29.5 million in its first three days of release, the movie reversed a steep downward trend at the box office.

The movie also commanded an audience that was 67 percent under the age of 25 -- the very moviegoers who are critical to maintaining the theatrical box office.

By spending a tight $13 million on production, leveraging tons of free, viral publicity -- everywhere from Saturday Night Live to the pop star's massive Twitter feed -- the movie just might represent a prototype for future theatrical success.

Also read: Grammys: On a Night of Bold Performances, Safe Choice Lady Antebellum Rules

Not only was "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" produced for the entirely frugal $13 million but it required a prints-and-advertising spend of only around $20 million, according to Paramount executives.

"The ad spend was about half of what you would normally have to put out to get a gross like that," noted Don Harris, general manager of distribution for Paramount. For Paramount, which launched the Jon Chu directed film through its Insurge micro-budget label, timing was everything.

Within a span of only about six months -- turnaround time for script changes at most major studios -- Insurge was able to conceptualize, develop and shoot the biographically-edged concert movie focused on an emerging star with a big fat Twitter following -- currently at 7.2 million and ever growing.

Also read: 10 Rockers and Rappers to Follow on Twitter

But being able to get the movie ready quickly enabled "Never Say Never" to debut at a time when its subject is still very hot ... and has a ton of no-cost marketing opportunities.

In the run-up to "Never Say Never," these included an appearance at the Golden Globes, during which the teen icon aggressively hawked his film, as well as spots on "The Daily Show," "David Letterman," "Ellen" and two gigs on "Saturday Night Live."

And while Paramount executives say it was never their master plan to have "Never Say Never" debut during Grammys weekend, when Bieber's media presence would be more ubiquitous than usual, the timing was fortunate.

"You have to attribute most of the film's success to the passion and awareness that was built in already on the Internet," said a rival-studio distribution executive. Justin Bieber Goes Back In Time For Grammy Performance - MTV.com

When Eva Longoria hit the Grammy stage to introduce Justin Bieber's performance, she reminded the world that only a few years ago, Bieber was hustling just to get his music heard. She then introduced a clip from his just-released movie, "Never Say Never," that gave an inside look at a 2007 meeting between Bieber and his mentor, Usher, during which Bieber sang for him. As the clip played out, Bieber sat on the stage, an acoustic guitar on his lap, and Usher came out to chat with the star. "Yeah, that was four years ago. That's how it started," Usher said.

"You told me if it was meant to be, we would meet again," a leather-clad Bieber responded when Usher explained that he didn't listen to him sing until their second encounter. "That's right, and now it's your time," Usher said, before Bieber, who was singing in a much lower octave than fans are used to, started playing an acoustic version of "Baby."

Check out photos of Justin Bieber and all the 2011 Grammy performances.

Soon ninjas playing drums came down the aisles pounding out the beat to "Never Say Never" as Bieber was joined onstage by acrobats. Jaden Smith then popped up from the stage and rapped his part of the song.

When Smith left the stage, Usher came on, singing a bit of "OMG," wearing sleek military-type garb surrounded by similarly attired dancers performing pop-and-lock moves. Justin then joined him toward the end of the song to display some of his own dancing skills, and sang the final bars of the song with his mentor.

"I am going to [perform and] I'm gonna have some surprises there," Bieber recently told MTV News about the performance. "We got some other performers that are going to be there with me, Jaden and Usher, so I'm really excited about it. Jaden's cool. He's gonna kick it. He's gonna kill it. I'm excited."

Usher also gave us a preview the big performance, noting that it was just about having a good time. "The performance will be fun," Usher explained. "We want to get up there and just do what we do. Be comfortable, and have a great time. ... This is kind of a crossover for Justin. Having performed on so many different stages, this is the way that I wanted him to be seen and an opportunity to show the industry — a lot of the industry, that didn't believe [in him] — some of his other talents. He's going to play acoustically, and also, we'll get down a little bit."

For Grammy Awards winners list, analysis, interviews, fashion and more, stick with MTV News during the big show and beyond.

Well there is the right answer: You can't; and there's the wrong answer: Do it with home videos, deadbeat dads, monotone neighbors, cruel adults and hyperactive teenagers. "Never Say Never" chose the wrong answer.

"Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" is an obvious knockoff of Michael Jackson's "This Is It," and trying to make that comparison is just laughable. Bieber's movie center's on his Madison Square Gardens concert, even though the bulk of the footage is from home videos and watching Bieber be an annoying teenager. And I'll tell you now that Bieber's home videos are exactly the same as any other kid's, meaning they don't belong onscreen. I mean, who wants to go to the theater and watch a kid open Christmas presents? "Oooh, a dart gun. Thanks Mom. Oh wow, a book, I love it. Thanks, Dad." Oh wait, except that his deadbeat dad didn't show back up until Justin got famous, which brings me to the depressing aspect of the show.

Justin is the only kid in the entourage, and surrounding him are dozens and dozens of adults using Justin as their meal ticket. It was just sad to see how blatantly these people – mom, dad, vocal coach, agent, etc. – were controlling and ruining his life. It may seem fine now, but once Justin is 18 and no one wants to listen to him anymore, he will just be another screwed-up child star.

On the child star note, there was actually a very telling analogy made in the film, where Bieber was called the Macaulay Culkin of music. You remember Macaulay, right? All the adorable "Home Alone" flicks? And what happened to him? Simply put, he got ugly and no one wanted to look at him anymore, much less put him in a movie again. So it will be with the Bieber. I'm not saying he'll get ugly. He'll probably be cute as ever, but his fan base is not even teenagers, which may have been able to propel him from teen bopper to more adult audiences. No, Justin Bieber's crowd lies somewhere between Dora and Taylor Swift, 8- to 12-year-olds. Though admittedly bigger than his comparable predecessors (Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, etc.), he has nothing to propel him beyond this highly focused niche.

With a lot less music than you might have hoped, boring interviews with neighbors and other random people who knew him, and the uncomfortable footage of 8- to 12-year-olds swearing their love and lust for Justin, I'll say just forget this movie. It will open big this opening weekend, but by week two, no one will remember that it's even there, and I give it a COLD (1 of 5) RATING.

RATING: COLD (1 of 5)

"Never Say Never," is rated G and is suitable for all audiences.

Copyright 2011 Rexburg Standard Journal. 'Justin Bieber: Never Say Never': Will Paramount's Christian outreach program ... - Entertainment Weekly

Image Credit: Paramount PicturesJustin Bieber: Never Say Never hits theaters this weekend, and, God willing, could be the topic of many conversations come Sunday — at least that's what Paramount, the studio behind the 3-D documentary's release, is hoping. Paramount has held 20 screenings in 20 markets at the end of January for Christian leaders, some of whom then offered written endorsements, arranged group ticket sales for their fellowship, or requested a copy of the study guide produced for the movie titled "Never Say Never: For Nothing Is Impossible With God."

Execs recognized that the film's message of hope and Bieber's strong Christian beliefs, about which both he and his mother Pattie Mallette have spoken extensively, were an opportunity to reach out to the faith community. The study guide is a collaboration between Bieber's mother and Allied Faith & Family, an arm of Allied Integrated Marketing. It's the first time Paramount has worked with Allied to supplement its general publicity, but not the first time the studio has had a faith-based element to a movie campaign. (The studio had faith-based outreach programs for the documentaries Waiting for "Superman" and An Inconvenient Truth and the adaptation of The Kite Runner.) Indeed, marketing to Christian groups became quite popular post-The Passion of the Christ; like secular marketing campaigns, it's about making sure people who may not think a film has something for them see that it does — like Bieber's pre-performance ritual that includes a prayer introduced to him by his Jewish manager, or Bieber and his friends saying grace at a pizza parlor.

So how effective will Paramount's efforts be for this film? The study guide made its way into the inbox of Sean Meade, who serves as the National Network of Youth Ministries' national coordinator for middle school groups and also runs an organization called Stuck in the Middle, which holds events for middle school-aged students in the U.S. and Canada and does training for youth pastors. "Big picture, I know a lot of people are planning to use this movie within their ministry," he tells EW. "I work specifically with middle school students and with youth pastors who focus on that age group, and if you have middle school girls in your group, they're gonna go see the Justin Bieber movie, and they're gonna be talking about it, and those themes are something that really resonates with that early adolescent age. Youth pastors want to be talkin' about this with their kids."

That said, Meade doesn't exactly see the guide itself coming in handy with what one would assume would be the target demo. "It starts off with an introduction from Justin's mom talking about his faith, which is awesome. But then the very first theme is 'Discerning God's Plan for Your Life' and it goes into what I call Christianese, where it's Christian language that unless you've been born and raised in the church, you have no idea what 'separating the wheat from the chaff' or 'the lures of the flesh from the operations of the spirit' means," he says. "If I start talking like that to my 8th grade guys group, they're gonna think I'm crazy."

But while he thinks the application is "a little cheesy," he believes the lesson is solid. "Overall, it helps to understand that Justin's a kid who worked hard and did his best, and you can do those same things and help discern what maybe God wants you to do with your life. You've got a kid who's had, I'm sure, every opportunity to just go crazy and live out any kind of teenage fantasy that he's ever wanted to, and yet seems to be very grounded and not only just a good kid, but seems to make a lot of wise choices. I watched Diddy last night on [Jimmy Kimmel Live!], and the guy looked teary-eyed talking about Justin and the themes of the movie. And he actually said that Justin had a God-ordained talent. I thought Man, if you've got Diddy talking about your God-ordained talent and what a good kid you are, you gotta be doing something right."

Diddy made a plea to Kimmel's viewers to see the film as a human success story, one that appeals to all ages and both sexes. "I think it's definitely a hard sell for young boys," Meade says. "My home church weekend activity tonight has like 150 junior highers coming together. I threw it out to my 8th grade guys, half joking, 'Are we gonna go see the Bieber movie tonight after the event?' They're just one, so tired of hearing about Bieber from all the girls. But two, I think there's a macho element of 'I'm a guy. I can't go to the Justin Bieber movie.' Except for the couple of wise ones who've figured out that all the girls will be at the Justin Bieber movie, and they're excited," Meade says. "But that's a whole different story."

Read more:
Owen Gleiberman reviews Justin Bieber: Never Say Never
Box office preview: Justin Bieber and Adam Sandler duel for pop-culture supremacy

Box office preview: Justin Bieber and Adam Sandler duel for pop-culture supremacy - Entertainment Weekly

Image Credit: Tracy BennettA lethargic box-office season is about to receive a jolt of pizzazz this weekend, as four new movies, each appealing to a different audience segment, hit theaters. But that makes it a particularly tough weekend to predict. The logical winner should be Just Go With It, Sony's romantic comedy starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. Few actors are as dependable at the box office as Sandler, who has opened seven of his last 11 films to at least $30 million. But the 3-D concert pic Justin Bieber: Never Say Never is a wild card that could conceivably open anywhere from $20 million to $40 million. And even Disney's animated Gnomeo & Juliet could threaten for first place. The family market has been seriously neglected for more than a month, creating a scenario in which any new family film could overperform. The only new movie that won't be competing for the top spot is the Channing Tatum historical action film The Eagle. My predictions:

1. Just Go With It: $31 million

With Valentine's Day on Monday, this weekend is the perfect release date for this PG-13 romantic comedy, in which Adam Sandler plays a bachelor who pretends to be in a destructive marriage as a way to attract other women. When Sandler finally meets someone he genuinely falls for (it helps that this romantic interest looks like Brooklyn Decker), he enlists Jennifer Aniston to become his imaginary wife. Initial reviews are awful, but that's never stopped Sandler's fans in the past. The actor's last proper romantic comedy, 2004′s 50 First Dates, also debuted around Valentine's Day and scored a bountiful $39.9 million. But Just Go With It's premise isn't as high-concept as 50 First Dates, nor is its title as appealing. Still, the film is the safest bet to win the weekend, even if it doesn't approach some of Sandler's biggest openings. However, watch out for…

2. Justin Bieber: Never Say Never: $29 million

The G-rated 3-D concert film/biopic/Canadian propaganda is a tricky movie to gauge. Is it Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which tallied $31.1 million from just 683 theaters its first weekend? Or is it Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience, which restored order to the universe by debuting to only $12.5 million from 1,271 locations. Never Say Never is playing in 3,105 theaters — far more than either Hannah Montana or Jonas Brothers. And Bieber, who's made as many media appearances last week as there are programs to appear on, has never been more prominent in the pop-culture zeitgeist. And yet, although I should probably listen to my gut and predict Never Say Never to conquer the weekend, I just can't see the 16-year-old singer toppling a box-office giant like Adam Sandler. At least not yet. Never Say Never, which cost only $13 million to produce, may start the weekend in first as tween girls rush out on Friday to feed their Bieber Fever, but Just Go With It should ultimately inch ahead by Sunday night.

3. Gnomeo & Juliet: $20 million

There hasn't been a movie aimed directly at kids since December's Yogi Bear and Gulliver's Travels, so Gnomeo & Juliet (which is being released by Disney's Touchstone Pictures label) will be filling a glaring void at the multiplex. (As well as a void of Shakespearean films starring inanimate objects.) So, family-friendly G rating + 3-D price hike + cute talking gnomes + Elton John songs + little competition = $20 million opening. Making box-office hits is easy!

4. The Eagle: $9 million

This 2nd-century Roman Empire epic, starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell, was directed by the talented Scottish filmmaker Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland, Touching the Void). But the $25 million Focus Features movie has a comparatively smaller 2,296-theater release, and Tatum hasn't had much luck launching titles that weren't romances (like Dear John) or part of a franchise with built-in awareness (G.I. Joe). With such a crowded marketplace, The Eagle will be lucky to reach $10 million this weekend.

5. The Roommate: $7 million

This college thriller had its moment in the spotlight last weekend. Now comes the brutal fall, as The Roommate's core audience of young women will be lured away by the cornucopia of the new choices. A drop of at least 50 percent seems inevitable.

Also opening this weekend is Cedar Rapids, starring Ed Helms and John C. Reilly. The well-reviewed comedy, which premiered last month at Sundance, will be playing at 15 locations.

Directed by Jon Chu. At major theatres. 105 minutes. G

You wouldn't want to go to Justin Bieber: Never Say Never expecting anything terribly novel, even with the dubious adornment of 3-D.

Been there, done that, with teen idols and their quickie cinema cash-ins, at least as far back as Elvis and most recently in the third dimension with Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Bros.

No circular device is being reinvented here by the Canuck pop wunderkind and his vast entourage of Svengalis.

But darned if Bieber and director Jon Chu (from the Step Up dance film franchise) don't come up with something original anyway, the cheesiest stunt yet for a popper's insta-pic: the camera travelling up Bieber's throat to show the strained vocal chords that threaten his Madison Square Garden debut last fall.

The TonsilCam shot is an attempt to inject some drama into the rote behind-the-screams chronicle of 16-year-old Bieber's transformation from a precocious kid from Stratford, Ont. kid into a precocious kid from Stratford, Ont. who now sells millions of albums, fills major arenas and is reportedly worth $100 million.

The skinny kid with the hair like a flash-frozen tsunami now ranks somewhere between the fifth Beatle and the fourth Chipmunk, if breathless reports are to be believed. And anyone who wonders how he achieved this feat in the space of roughly two years will find plenty to sigh over in Never Say Never.

The film makes full use of the gadget-driven narcissism Bieber was born into in 1994, significantly the same year the Internet first cracked the public consciousness.

Despite his hard-luck beginnings as the son of a teen mom in a broken home, young Justin lived like a low-rent version of Jim Carrey's video-fetishized Truman Burbank from The Truman Show.

Seemingly every moment of Bieber's life was caught on camera, allowing Chu to show the skyrocket in full flight: from the lad's earliest living-room performances, to his Stratford street busking, to his fortuitous YouTube warblings that grabbed the attention of Scooter Braun, the U.S. talent scout who now manages Bieber like a 21st-century Col. Tom Parker.

This cache of grainy home videos and family/friend/teacher testimonials, which 3-D does nothing to improve, serves to silence any non-Beliebers who doubt Justin's musical abilities. He possesses ample chops, including surprisingly good drumming skills, all displayed without a hint of shyness — or humility, for that matter.

There's a generous selection of performances of such tween-touching hits as "Baby," "Smile" and "One Less Lonely Girl," the latter performed on stage as a love croon to a flower-bedecked girl plucked from the concert audience.

And check out that fan base, which includes not just delirious schoolgirls ("He's cute, he's awesome, I just love him so much," one coos to camera), but also a squad of earlier pop sensations coming down from their own sugar highs at various rates of deflation.

It's instructive and also fascinating to watch the likes of Miley Cyrus, Boyz II Men, Usher, Ludacris and Jaden Smith (identified as a "karate expert") all bum-rushing Bieber's stage, hoping to borrow some of that lightning he still has in his bottle.

Smith's preening is positively vampiric, since he's an actor and not a concert performer, and his inexperience and crass opportunism really show. Just last summer he was living large as the star of The Karate Kid remake; does success now have a shelf life shorter than Wonder Bread?

What Bieber has in greater abundance than anything or anyone is sheer determination. Watching him plow through an 86-show tour and numerous other celebrity duties, all while preparing for his omigod! MSG debut, suggest he'd literally walk through walls if it would benefit his career.

We're told that he has performed with a broken foot, with strep throat and in the middle of a rainstorm before 40 soaked fans.

Not all at the same time, thankfully, but such stoicism makes the hammy theatrics with the TonsilCam and the fretting over his New York gig seem just a tad on the suspicious side.

You don't know whether to damn Bieber and Chu for manipulating our emotions or praise them for trying to put some essence into this effervescence.

"Everything relies on two little strips of fiber in his throat," cautions Jan "Mama Jan" Smith, Bieber's vocal coach and 24/7 nag.

With all due props to Mama, the Justin Bieber phenomenon is about way more than the singing.

It's about believing in yourself, and never giving up until that last cash register ka-chings — really, Mama, haven't you been paying attention?

Will Justin Bieber Crash 'SNL' This Weekend? - MTV.com

Justin Bieber is sure feeling spontaneous lately. Days after his out-of-the-blue skit with John Stewart on "The Daily Show," it appears as if the pop star is set to try out his comedic chops once again for a surprise appearance on "Saturday Night Live" this weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

While little else is known about Bieber's cameo, it would mark the singer's second appearance on the late-night sketch show. Last April, the teen heartthrob made his debut appearance on "SNL" appearing alongside host Tina Fey in two sketches and served as the episode's musical guest. On Saturday's show, he would join former "SNL" castmember Dana Carvey, who will host this weekend's show, and musical guest Linkin Park.

From "The Seven" to his double-duty on "Late Show With David Letterman," the teen idol is hitting all the stops to promote his 3-D movie "Never Say Never," which hits theaters February 11. Earlier this week, the pop superstar spoke to MTV News at the film's NYC premiere about what his legion of Beliebers will love most about the highly anticipated film.

"Fans will be really excited to see that I'm just a regular 16-year-old having fun just living my dream," he said. "And it's possible for anyone to live theirs."

What do you think Justin will do on "SNL"? Diggy Simmons Teases Justin Bieber Collabo, Next Mixtape - MTV.com

Bieber Fever swept New York's Times Square on Wednesday evening as Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never" had its New York premiere. Plenty of Beliebers waited in hopes of getting a peek at the teen heartthrob, but a few of his friends came out to show their support as well, including former "Run's House Star" Diggy Simmons.

One of hip-hop's brightest up-and-comers, Diggy (and his younger brother Russy) hit the red carpet, where he said he wasn't exactly sure he had the fever. "I guess so," Diggy told MTV News. "This has been my boy for a while, so I'm just here supporting him."

The rising MC also revealed that he and Bieber plan to work together, but he still wasn't sure what the collaboration would sound like. "A mix of both of us, maybe a song about a girl, a life experience, you never know."

A collabo isn't surprising considering the two have a lot in common. Both have burgeoning careers ahead of them, Bieber has his Beliebers and Simmons has "Team Diggy." They're also both being guided by phenomenal mentors: Bieber is famously mentored by Usher, while Diggy has come up under the tutelage of his father Rev. Run of the legendary Run-DMC and his uncle Russell Simmons, in addition to Pharrell Williams.

While Diggy hasn't enjoyed the same success as Justin just yet, he has released two mixtapes, First Flight and Airborne, that have been well-received by fans. And he also told us he's started working on his debut album, though he was coy about specifics apart from the fact that producer Boi-1da would be involved.

"I'm working on my freshman album, my debut album. I just started that two weeks ago. And I'm working on another mixtape that I'm going to put out this spring."

Do you want to see Diggy and Justin work together? Tell us in the comments!
